Time passed. Henry watched his family from a distance, his heart filled with a strange, possessive pride, but at the same time, he felt something was changing. Evelyn was different. A new, quiet flame of determination had appeared in her eyes. And Henry, as a faithful observer, knew what it meant. She was going to try to run.

He wasn't surprised. It disappointed him, of course. He thought she had understood by now. That she had accepted their new reality. She took the money every month. They were a family. But apparently, she needed another lesson.

At the end of August, almost two years after that night, his suspicion was confirmed. A moving van appeared in front of her apartment building. While two tired men in overalls carried her life, packed in cardboard boxes, out of the building, Henry sat in his car on the other side of the street, calmly drinking coffee from a thermos. He was ready.

You think you can just leave, Evelyn? You think I'll let you break our family apart? You are so naive.

He let them load the last box and watched as Evelyn locked the door to her old apartment for the last time. Her face was tense but determined. An expression of hope. Henry smiled bitterly.

When the van started to move, Henry waited thirty seconds and then calmly pulled into traffic, maintaining a safe distance. It wasn't difficult. They were heading east, out of the city. The journey took about three hours. They were driving towards a small, forgotten village where, as Henry knew, her widowed mother lived.

The movers parked in front of a small, older family house with a large garden. An ideal place for a family. Safe. Quiet. And Henry now knew exactly where it was. He watched them for another hour, then turned around and left. He let her settle in. He gave her the illusion of a new beginning.

It was noble of him, he thought. Everyone needs hope, after all. Even if it was just a lie she was allowed to live for a moment, before reality reminded her again that there is no escaping him. Never.

Autumn came to this small village too, painting the leaves on the trees in the garden in shades of gold and blood, and Henry watched it all. It took him only three weeks to find a small house for rent on the opposite end of the village. It was inconspicuous, quiet, and most importantly, it provided him with a strategic overview of their life. His job as a programmer allowed him the luxury of working from anywhere. And he chose to be here. Close to them.

He gave her a month. September was a month of adaptation. For her, and for him. He watched her settle in. Watched her hang laundry in the garden. Watched her mother, an older woman with a tired face, help with the parenting. He saw their routine. The mother often went shopping in the city or to the local church. Evelyn stayed home alone. There were windows of opportunity. There still were.
